Shoe designer Jerry Lorenzo ends his partnership with Vans for a seemingly better one with Nike. The Vans and Fear of God collab didn’t last as long as fans would have hoped, but there’s plenty to look for if they adjust themselves to Lorenzo’s future with Nike.
It’s a step up for any designer wanting confirmation of their skills and access to “Swoosh” popularity and foothold in the sneaker industry. Despite the rivals on their back, they’re still number one. In the end, he’s just doing business.
Fans must have caught on in 2018 when he said on Instagram: “No more vans. Swoosh for 18’.” Due to restocking issues and concerns of fans and buyers, he alluded to the future and hinting to his audience, forget about Vans. Basically saying, I’m packing to leave. Don’t worry about inventory.
It was just a matter of time before we started seeing leaked images of his brand, not on Vans, but Nikes. His Fear of God collection with Nike is eye-catching and less cookie-cutter than his former offerings. His Vans collection was really just Vans improved with his imprinted brand and some nuances here and there. But his Nike collab is looking like he got some design freedom and can breathe his ideas more into this partnership.
No shade. His touch on Vans will be missed, with the Era, Mountain Edition, Sk8-Hi, and Slip-On going down as Lorenzo/Vans history.
But after reinventing himself once more with Nike, his work with Vans is all but forgotten, and fans have moved on with him.
We got the successful Nike Air Fear of God. Now, we have the Nike Air Fear of God 1 releasing in triple black, adding to his well-received colorways and original silhouette. It’s the second colorway announcement alongside the “the string” for an all-star weekend release.
The “Triple Black” is in all respects an on-court basketball shoe in performance, featuring a black jeweled swoosh on the lateral and medial side panels. Some of the parts have the Italian made standard as they were manufactured there. Instead of the typical blue air zoom bubble in other colorways, the “Triple Black’s” bubble is black. It has a black neoprene upper, cage, and midsole with the toe cap being suede and slightly on the grey side.
The Nike Air “Fear of God” will be released on February 14th, retailing at $350 on Nike.com and select shops.
